The standard is a 1 to 1-and a-half-year apprenticeship and covers the key competencies required to successfully manage teams and projects in line with an organisation’s operational or departmental strategy. The programme will cover a variety of topics allowing managers to contribute to, and create, strategic plans alongside the creation and development of business plans which will be integral to a business’ performance. Some of the topics covered include: managing people, developing relationships, operational management, project management and finance which are all fundamental to a management trainee role. Communication skills, decision making skills and organisational skills are a few of the skills individuals will develop throughout this apprenticeship to help them exceed in future management roles.  

Course Description

A team leader/supervisor is a first line management role, with operational/project responsibilities or responsibility for managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome. They provide direction, instructions and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals.  Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of an organisation, specific responsibilities will vary but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same whatever the role.  

The apprenticeship has a typical duration of 12 - 18 months. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship the employer may decide to further the apprentice’s development through the Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard.

The key responsibilities of the apprentice are likely to include supporting, managing and developing team members, managing projects, planning and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems, and building relationships internally and externally.
