This training on effective governance is based on good practice observed in the UK and internationally, tailored to the context of schools in the Middle East. It is led by Russell Speirs, Founder and CEO of RSAcademics, and Durell Barnes, Head of Governance and Compliance, working closely with Deniece Wheeler, Lead Consultant in the MENA region.

The introductory session of 90 minutes is free and will explore the principles and characteristics of good governance. Sessions 2, 3 and 4 are 60 minutes in duration and are to be booked together for a fee of £175. Session 2 will look at Governors’ responsibilities in terms of inspection and other requirements and explore what kinds of data they need to see and how to interrogate it. Session 3 will explore the relationship with the head, including how to approach the appointment, what constitutes ‘critical friendship’ and how to balance providing both challenge and support in order to get the best out of him or her. Session 4 will look at the role of governors as the guardians of the school’s aims and values, how this relates to the setting of strategy and how to monitor the implementation of a strategic plan.
