For Dom, Bruno and the Amazon - exhibition/event launch

For Dom, Bruno and the Amazon - exhibition/event launch

About

Environmental journalist Dom Phillips was travelling in Amazonia with indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, researching a book about sustainable ways to protect the rainforest and its people, when they were murdered by men involved in illegal fishing. Halton Mill is honouring Dom, Bruno and other activists who have lost their lives, with an exhibition, films, talks and more, during November. Join us at the launch of the exhibition and the event programme on Sunday 30 October at 5 – 7 p.m. for Brazilian music, food and a chance to see the exhibition. Dom Phillips' sister local musician Sian Phillips, will open the evening. Free, all welcome. Please book here to help us with catering numbers.

The specially curated exhibition opening at Halton Mill on Sunday 30 October honours Dom and Bruno and others who have lost their lives to this cause, demonstrates aspects of the destruction of the rain forest, but also points to hopeful solutions and offers next steps and ways you can get involved and support positive change. Learn about Dom Phillips' & Bruno Pereira's work, and about what needs to be  done to support social justice in Amazonia.

Sian Phillips will open the evening, and the programme also includes local composer/musician Pete Moser, Brazilian music from the Amazon with Brazilian musician Gabriel Silveira and his sister, Lancaster based singer Jualiana Silveira, Brazilian sounds from DJ Naomi Carole, and Brazilian food (including vegan and g/f options) lovingly prepared by Tiliana Bezerra of Manchester based Brazilian caterers Tilisalgados.

Pete Moser worked internationally for many years in Brazil and in the Far East, in particular in Hong Kong.  At the launch he will share songs written with elders in Morecambe and in Hong Kong that highlight issues around water, rivers, climate change and the power of connection between people across the globe. We will learn the songs and then add our own words and phrases before recording them to share yet again with friends in Brazil and Hong Kong

More venues around the Lancaster District are also partnering with Halton Mill to put on Amazon-related activities during November.    Most #DomBrunoLancaster #DomBrunoAmazon events during the month are free, donations invited to an appeal  set up by Dom’s and Bruno’s families to support  the indigenous defenders of the rainforest. The  full programme, with activities across Lancaster  District, can be downloaded from the project dedicated webpage www.haltonmill.org.uk/DomBruno.

Earlier in the day at 3 p.m. there's a free Capoeira class upstairs in the River Room at Halton Mill with Tali Griner. Open to all ages from 8 to 80!  Come and try this Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, dance, acrobatics,  music and spirituality.  It's free, book at https://www.trybooking.co.uk/BXAB  when you've finished booking for the launch.
