About
Sunday afternoon concert - with Shetland themed Sunday lunch. Lunch at 1, concert at 2.
Shetland Fiddle Tune workshop for musicians, from 12-1.
The Springbank Voyage tells the story of the Clydebuilt four masted sailing barque Springbank and her 1908 journey from Hamburg to Mexico. Heartbreak, danger, wonder and tragedy follow this musical retelling of the ship's voyage around Cape Horn. The live show incorporates evocative sound clips from Shetland storytellers both past and present along with a slide show that conjures the Springbank and the last days of sail.
Barry on fiddle, guitar and voice will be joined by Theodore Barnard on guitar and upright bass and Pepita Emmerichs on mandolin, mandocello and fiddle.
£15 (standard), £10 (concessions, young people). £20 (supporters). £5 (hardship price). Free for refugees and asylum seekers. Shetland fiddle tune workshop for musicians, an extra £5. Two course lunch (optional extra) £10. Bar.
'Emotionally bittersweet and rich in historical detail, Barry Nisbet's second solo album is a clear labour of love and an artistic tour de force' (Folking.com)
'Album of the week' - Celtic Music Radio
A skilled guitarist, fiddler and songwriter, Barry Nisbet performs in Shetland dialect and in English, his songs giving a sensitive take on past and contemporary events. His fiddle style derives from the rare Shetland tradition of the Cullivoe Fiddlers. As likely to be seen at the wheel of a tall ship as on a festival stage, Barry runs the 'Sessions and Sail' voyages.
Before the concert, Barry will run a Shetland Fiddle Tune Workshop, open to reasonably competent musicians on any instrument. He's taught Shetland tunes to many a musician on the Sessions and Sail seagoing music trips over the past few years, and his Cullivoe Fiddling style is a joy to hear. 'The distinctive sound of the local tunes, mostly reels, derives from the unusual tuning of the fiddle (ADAE instead of the conventional GDAE, known locally as the 'high bass') and the lively bowing style. (The bowing was once described by Willie Barclay Henderson as 'like wippin a screw o coarn''. (from the Cullivoe Fiddlers CD booklet).
