Revealing Hadrian's Wall - Section 1 (Bowness to Carlisle)
About
A series of detailed investigations along the line of Hadrian's Wall, beginning in the west at Bowness-on-Solway.Section 1 follows the line of the Wall from Bowness to Carlisle looking for evidence of where the Wall once lay and describes many other features of interest along the way.
On this virtual tour, we will identify Roman stones re-used in later buildings, admire an ornately carved Norman font, look for telltale signs of the vallum on the ground, consider the importance of Port Carlisle as an embarkation point for emigrees to the United States, and discuss why the church at Burgh-by-Sands had two towers rather than one.
