Revealing Hadrian's Wall - Section 4 (Gilsland to Cawfields)
About
A series of detailed investigations along the line of Hadrian's Wall, beginning in the west at Bowness-on-Solway.Section 4 follows the line of the Wall from Gilsland to Cawfields looking for evidence of where the Wall once lay and describing other features of interest along the way.
On this section, we follow the prominent indentation of the north ditch towards Thirlwall Castle (built entirely out of Hadrian's Wall), then head uphill with magnificent views looking back to the west. At the top of the hill, we will visit the Stanegate fort of Magna before moving north to the Wall as it hugs the edge of the Walltown Crags. Beyond, we need to use detective skills to identify the Wall and its milecastles (often seen as grassy mounds). Along the way, we pass an unusual corner turret, a Roman pillar re-purposed as a gatepost and the remains of the Roman fort of Aesica before ending this section at Cawfields.
