W.A. Mozart String Quintet in E-flat major
The first period instrument string quartet to be selected as BBC New Generation Artists, the Consone Quartet are fast making a name for themselves with their honest and expressive interpretations of classical and romantic repertoire. In 2016 they were awarded the Royal Over-Seas League Ensemble Prize. Their debut recording in 2019 was described by The Strad as an album “that instantly leaps out of the stereo at you as something special”.
Their programme for the Festival opens with Sibelius’ Andante Festivo. Its slow tempo, changes in dynamics and recurring melody makes this one of his most memorable works.
Schumann’s Quartet in A major offers the kind of intensely expressive music you might expect given it was composed soon after his marriage to his beloved Clara.
For Mozart’s String Quintet in E-flat major, the Consone are joined by viola player Francesca Gilbert. It ranges from an almost bucolic style (the violas imitate hunting horns at the outset) to a natural Mozartian grace and refinement.
