Chapter & Connections: Illustrated Talk
About
Eighteenth-century cathedrals were cultural and political hubs not just for the diocese and the city but were connected into the literary life of the whole country through the writings and associations of Chapter members and their families. This illustrated lecture attempts to show how much that was the case for Carlisle during the reign of George III. There were nationally significant figures including Thomas Percy, a pioneer of the Romantic revival; Isaac Milner, scientist, evangelical and Cambridge vice-chancellor; and Archdeacon William Paley, the utilitarian philosopher. The lecture places such figures within their Cumberland context but also introduces less familiar members of the Chapter, including those in the circle of Bishop Edmund Law (1768-87), unorthodox prelate and another controversial Cambridge philosopher.Location
