SPARTA: Mark Wallinger – Art in the Public Realm
About
He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2001. Labyrinth (2013), a major and permanent commission for Art on the Underground, was created to celebrate 150 years of the London Underground. In 2018, the permanent work Writ in Water was realised for the National Trust to celebrate Magna Carta at Runnymede, and The World Turned Upside Down was unveiled in 2019 for the London School of Economics. Wallinger’s practice has developed from painting to encompass photography, video, sculpture and installation work. Employing the tools of irony and satire, Wallinger explores issues surrounding the complex themes of identity, class, race, and religion.
Mark Wallinger will be giving a talk about his practice and his experience of making public artworks in particular. He will discuss the civic importance of such work and how they can provoke discussion of what we need from our public spaces. The discussion about Creative Process will engage GCSE/ A-Level pupils participating in the event to deepen their understanding of his practice. This event will be introduced by the Director of Art at St Paul’s School – Mr Michael Grant.
