The 2023 Lowry Lounge

The Bluecoat's annual celebration of Wirral-born writer Malcolm Lowry this year involves a
walking tour of Hilbre Island in the afternoon. This 'island in the estuary', reached on foot
from West Kirby, is mentioned in Under the Volcano, and writer Helen Tookey and others
will reflect on how this and other Wirral landmarks feature in Lowry's work. Dominic
Wilkinson, Principal Lecturer in architecture at Liverpool John Moores University, will also
introduce a project he is leading to bring a group of semi-derelict buildings on the island
back to life as a creative centre.

The Lounge starts at the Bluecoat in the morning with a reading by Robert Sheppard from
his new book, Doubly Stolen Fire: reflections on authorship, real and imaginary, which
includes his writings on Lowry. There will also be updates on other Lowry-related projects,
including a new online archive that is being developed charting the arts centre's 14-year
Lounge programme.

Please note: the walk to Hilbre Island takes approximately 50 minutes and can be
wet/muddy so wear waterproof footwear. Ranger transport will be available for those who
need/prefer it, but spaces are limited so please indicate when booking if you will require this.
If weather conditions render the trip inadvisable, we will stay at the Bluecoat for the
duration of the Lounge.

Lunch is not provided but there will be an opportunity to eat after the morning session and
before we head to Central Station about 1pm to get the train to West Kirby (the cost of this will be covered).
