Ensemble In Echo: 'In the Summertime'
About
Johann Sommer was a celebrated violinist based in Bremen. His punningly-titled 1623 collection of instrumental sonatas 'Fröhliche Sommerzeit' (Joyful Summertime) contains some of the most inventive writing for 2, 3 and even 4 violins and/or cornettos. This concert shows off the playfulness and virtuosity of 17th century North German instrumental music and includes music by Sommer’s contemporaries Samuel Scheidt and Johann Schmelzer. It also features Johann Pachelbel’s famous Canon, played here, perhaps for the first time, with cornetto taking one of the three solo lines.Formed and directed by cornetto player Gawain Glenton, In Echo is a diverse ensemble that explores the rich repertoires of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Specialising in renaissance and baroque music, the ensemble also commissions and performs new music for old instruments. In this concert the band will be playing violin, viola, violone, recorder and keyboard as well as cornetto, all on period instruments
