Celebrating Dorothy Wordsworth’s Rydal Journals

Celebrating Dorothy Wordsworth’s Rydal Journals

hero

About

On 1 December 1824, Dorothy Wordsworth resumed her former practice of keeping a daily record of everyday life in the Lakes after a hiatus of nearly 22 years. Almost exactly 200 years (to the day) later, this webinar will celebrate both the achievement of the Rydal Journals—the 15 notebook diaries that Dorothy ultimately filled over the ensuing decade—and the pending release of the first-ever edition of these remarkable journals. This is the last great work of Wordsworthian editorship of previously unpublished manuscripts – a truly landmark occasion.

During this webinar there will be the opportunity to see some of the original handwritten journals close-up on screen, handled live in the Jerwood Centre at Wordsworth Grasmere.

This event is in collaboration with the British Association for Romantic Studies (BARS).

Speakers

Nicholas Mason is a Professor of English at Brigham Young University, a co-editor of the digital edition Dorothy Wordsworth’s Lake District (Romantic Circles, 2023), and the editor of Liverpool UP’s forthcoming edition of the Rydal Journals.

Susanne Sutton is a retired English teacher from Saint John, New Brunswick, who began working on the Rydal Journals in 2008 and served as the associate editor of the forthcoming edition.

Lavender Earnest and Emily Stephens Casper are former M.A. students in English at Brigham Young University who, while completing their degrees, helped to research and transcribe significant portions of the Rydal Journals.

Jeff Cowton is Principal Curator & Head of Learning at Wordsworth Grasmere.
