Come & Sing Paukenmesse

Come & Sing Paukenmesse

Saturday 8 February 2025 10:00am - 4:30pm

* If online sales have closed then you can still come on the day and pay on the door *

Wimbledon Choral will be hosting a Come-n-Sing Day in central Wimbledon with a focus on Haydn's 'Paukenmesse'.  It'll probably be a cold and wet day so come into the warm and explore this wonderful choral music under the direction of our new Music Director, Daniel Mahoney..  This event is open to all singers of all capabilities.   We will be using the standard Novello version.

Written in 1796, the Missa in tempore belli (Mass in Time of War) is one of the six masses written near the end of Haydn's life that are seen as a culmination of his composition of liturgical music.  As Kapellmeister to Prince Nikolaus II Esterházy, Haydn’s principal duty in the last period of his life, beginning in 1796, was the composition of an annual mass to honour the name day of Prince Nicholas’ wife, Princess Maria Hermenegild, on 8 September.   Reflecting the troubled mood of this time with Austria being dragged into a bloody and damaging European War, Haydn integrated references to battle in the Benedictus and Agnus Dei movements.  The nickname Paukenmesse comes from its dramatic use of timpani throughout the work.

Schedule for the day

10:00 - 10:30 : Registration
10:30 - 11:50 : Session 1
11:50 - 12:10 : Break for refreshments and a ton of cakes and other goodies
12:10 - 13:30 : Session 2
13:30 - 14:30 : Break for lunch
14:30 - 15:30 : Session 3
15:30 - 15:50 : Break for refreshments and more cake
15:50 - 16:30 : Run-through and finish

This leaves the evening free and for you to get home safely if you have travelled some distance.  Friends and family will be very welcome to come along to listen to the final run-through for free.   There will be a retiring collection for a nominated charity for those who would like to donate.   Do encourage your singing friends to come to this event.

There are two participant rates - Adult and Student (anyone in full-time education) and you have the option to either hire a copy of the score on the day or bring your own copy (Novello edition) if you have one.  Please make sure you select the appropriate combination(s) on the next page.

The venue for this event is St Mark's Church, right in the middle of Wimbledon and where Wimbledon Choral usually rehearses each week..  It is only a few minutes' walk from Wimbledon station (national rail, tram and District line underground) and is also served by several bus routes.   Click here for further details.  Please note there is very little street car parking available but there is a multi-storey car park in St George's Road..  There are plenty of places to eat and drink within minutes of the venue.
