About
Title: “Decoding Diversity Speak: How Racism Thrives in the Post-Racial City”Dr. Shana Almeida, Toronto Metropolitan University, Toronto, Canada
In 2016, BBC Radio 4 officially declared Toronto, Canada to be the most diverse city on earth. Responding to the declaration made by the BBC, Patricia McCarney, Director of Global Cities Institute at the University of Toronto, remarked that Toronto’s top ranking is “proof of Toronto’s welcoming attitude to newcomers”, and to its cultural openness (Ngabo, 2016).
This talk will centre the following question: How do we discuss and address claims of racism in Toronto, a city that is known internationally for its post-racial sensibilities?
Initiated in a local context, this work's findings is intended to contribute to a global reservoir of critical knowledge and strategies addressing the intersections of race, racism, political decision-making, and state power.
