The Doctrine of Signatures with (SOLD OUT)
About
Join Dr Craig Jordan-Baker with an evening exploring the ancient botanical belief known as ‘The Doctrine of Signatures’. The Doctrine held that plants gave outward ‘signs’ of their uses to humankind. By its logic, the kidney-shaped fruits of the kidney vetch could cure kidney problems and the flower eyebright was thought to restore vision. Now largely supplanted by modern botany and medicine, the Doctrine of Signatures nevertheless can still tell us much about plant names, history and our relationship with the natural world. This evening event will be a mixture of a fun and interactive lecture, supported by music from local folk singer Jo Burke, who has a wealth of songs about some of the plants and ideas we’ll encounter. We’ll then be finishing the evening off with some home-made food and drink, and a more informal space where we can chat and enjoy each other’s company at the home-pub, The Common Bond.
