Introduction to Coaching Basketball Award 🏀
This course is for those that wish to become a Coaching Assistant in basketball. This course has been developed to provide learners with the confidence to deliver safe, fun and inclusive basketball sessions under the supervision of an independent coach.
Learners can expect to cover the following:
•Passing (including getting free and catching the ball)
•Shooting
•Dribbling
•Individual offence
•Individual defence
•Playing the game and simple tactics
•Introducing the game to beginners
•Basic rules
•Organising practice sessions
•Communication skills
•Teaching players the skills of passing, set shooting, lay-ups, footwork, dribbling and basic one v one and team play.
Who is the course for?
Individuals who usually attend this course are parents of performers, sports centre staff, teachers, youth workers, players or ex-players, interested adults, students etc
What's the value of the course?
This course is ideal for learners who are seeking voluntary or paid roles as an assistant basketball coach.
Leaner eligibility
Learners must:
- Be at least 14 years of age
- Be appropriately identified
- Be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing).
Assessment
Learners for this award shall be assessed by the course tutor taking a minimum of one 10 minutes coaching session with a group of players (6-10). The course tutor is responsible for continual assessment of the students for the duration of the course and for making the final decision regarding gaining the award.
Format / duration
The course is usually delivered on 3 seperarte days, consisting of 2 x 1 hour virtual classroom sessions and a 4 hour practical session.
Progression opportunities
This course can lead to further learning or training in the area of coaching basketball and/or other related areas. Learners may wish to progress onto the Basketball England level 2 award.
