Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
This qualification is known as the first stage teaching qualification. It has a teaching and training practice requirement.
The aim of the qualification is to provide learners with the understanding, knowledge and skills needed to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate education in a specialist area.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
•Understand the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training.
•Plan inclusive learning programmes to meet the needs of learners in education and training.
•Deliver education and training.
•Assess learners in education and training.
•Use resources for education and training.
•Teach in a specialist area.
Individuals who would like to purse a career in teaching and training
Individuals who are employed and working in teaching and training (including those that have just begun teaching and training who can meet the qualification requirements
Individuals delivering work-based training within voluntary, community, private or public organisations
Individuals who are not currently employed in teaching and training but can meet the qualification requirements
Individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification
For individuals who work with learners on a one-to-one basis
Individuals who need a teaching qualification to confirm occupational competence for their role as a teacher, trainer or tutor within a FE college, adults / community learning centre or training provider.
The course is suitable for those delivering education and training in ANY learning environment.
Learners must be:
a minimum of 19 years old
qualified/ experienced in the subject they intend to teach/deliver
able to have access to 30 teaching practice hours
be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing).
Possess reasonable levels of language, literacy and numeracy (An initial assessment may be required at induction phase)
Individuals are not required to have achieved a Level 3 Award in Education and Training before undertaking a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training. However, some individuals may have already achieved this qualification. Learners who have achieved the level 3 unit ‘Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training’ as part of the Award in Education and Training are eligible for credit transfer of this unit.
Course units
Learners will complete the following units as part of the course:
•Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
•Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training
•Delivering education and training
•Assessing learners in education and training
•Using resources for education and training
•Teaching in a specialist area (optional unit)
Assessments
The qualification will be assessed by a combination of assignments, a log of teaching evidence and observation of teaching or training. Simulation of teaching (micro-teaching) is not permitted.
Learners will be assessed in the planning, delivery and evaluation of at least 3 sessions for a minimum of 1 hour (3 hours in total). The sessions can be completed on a topic of choice, preferably in the subject that the learner specialises in. These should be on separate occasions to show progression and development. The observations will be linked to the following mandatory units:
•Delivering education and training
•Assessing learners in education and training
•Using resources for education and training
We will support you to arrange appropriate assessment opportunities. At least one of these assessments can be recorded and sent to us for assessment.

Is a qualification the only option?
Should the full qualification not be feasible (in terms of cost, learning hours required), we can always deliver the elements of the content as a bespoke continual professional development. This could then be used a recognition of prior learning in the future. We usually offer this as a solution to organisations that have a number of potential learners interested.
