The Paupers' Rebellion of 1858

In January 1858 a large body of able-bodied men, and reluctantly labouring on Preston Moor under the poor law guardians' strict 'labour test' programme, demanded more poor relief for their work. The guardians refused, and there followed several days of unrest which threatened to erupt into serious disorder. It was described in the local press as a 'Pauper Rebellion'. This talk explores why the rebellion occurred, and what it tells us about the treatment of the working poor in the mid-nineteenth century Preston.An illustrated talk by Dr. Lewis Darwen.
