Safe Haven or Shut Door? Refugees and the UK’s Broken Asylum
About
An event supported by Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation, Edinburgh Liberal Jewish Community and the Edinburgh Jewish Cultural Centre.Join us, with guest speaker Mia Hasenson-Gross from René Cassin – the Jewish voice for human rights – for a powerful conversation exploring the UK’s immigration detention system and the urgent need for safe and legal routes for refugees. Drawing on the Jewish experience of internment during WWII, this event reflects on how Britain once welcomed those fleeing persecution through schemes like the Kindertransport—and why such compassion is missing today.
We will examine the harmful impact of indefinite detention, especially on women and LGBTQI+ refugees, and discuss humane alternatives that uphold dignity and human rights.
Let’s reimagine a system that truly welcomes the stranger.
