Why people commit or enable wrongdoing in the workplace
About
Understanding how and why people do wrong is the first step to preventing wrong from occurring. This session analyses frequent causes of common workplace wrongdoing such as bullying, corruption, incompetence and sexual misconduct. It explores the role of the individual and of the group and the psychological factors that give rise to these problems and enable them to take foot in an organisation.Using the inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire as a case-study, we will be examining the testimonies of employees of two of the companies involved. Their words will show how these psychological mechanisms crept into these companies' course of business and culture.
We will be looking at ways to identify these factors and prevent them from taking hold in working practices. Understanding and noticing ways of thinking and behaviours that are harmful to an organisation will give organisations confidence in preventing expensive wrongdoing.
