DISCOVERY DAY: The Alleyns' Wedding Anniversary Celebration
ORGANISED BY THE FRIENDS OF THE ROSE
Come and join us for a celebration of Edward and Joan Alleyn's Wedding Anniversary!
They were married in 1592 and always celebrated their anniversary.
Joan was the step-daughter of The Rose's owner, Philip Henslowe.
Edward was the leading Elizabethan actor at the time and the favourite of Elizabeth I. He and Philip Henslowe had their fingers in many business deals, including brothels, tanneries and dye works. He became a member of the Court of the Middle Temple, mixing with lawyers and judges. He was also received and even allowed to dance at the Royal Court. After retiring from acting, he went on to found Dulwich College.
Discover how a rich, aspiring middle class Tudor couple would have celebrated their wedding anniversary.
What food would they have eaten?
How would it have been presented?
What entertainment would have been on offer?
Partake of a few Tudor sweetmeats and if you like you can join in with the dancing!
