Amanda-Jane Doran - Collections and House Manager at Ightham Mote - gives a talk about Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn - two extraordinary siblings who were both brilliant composers and performers with strong ties to England. Fanny Mendelssohn was very much in her brother’s shadow yet equally talented. Queen Victoria loved his song Italien, Op.9 which was actually written by his sister. In 1842, Queen Victoria wrote of his playing: “I have never heard anything so beautiful.”
Ightham Mote is home to the collection of the celebrated contralto, Mary Postans who sang at Queen Victoria’s coronation in 1838 and worked closely with Felix Mendelssohn notably premiering the oratorio St.Paul in 1836.
The talk explores Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn’s relationships through music, letters, pictures and the 1830 Stodart piano which is part of the collection. The award winning Fidelio Trio perform piano trios by Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn alongside contemporary works by Zöe Martlew and a world premiere by Nathan James Dearden supported by the Fenton Arts Trust.
Wine and soft drinks will be served after the concert - included in ticket price.
