The Fantasy Family and the Real One
About
Exploring family relational dynamics with neurodivergent clientsAs the holiday season nears, many clients feel the pull towards family harmony — and the pain when it’s missing. For neurodivergent people and their families, the holidays can bring unique challenges in communication, sensory needs, and emotional pace.
This two-hour experiential workshop invites counsellors and psychotherapists to explore the emotional complexity of family disappointment through a neurodivergent lens. Drawing on Transactional Analysis, we’ll look at the “fantasy family” and the real one — how expectations, grief, and intergenerational patterns shape festive encounters.
You’ll gain insight and practical tools to help clients balance closeness and distance, recognise signs of overwhelm, and co-regulate across neurotypes. The session closes with a reflective exercise to restore permission, choice, and compassion in family relationships.
