Come From Away
About
“When the world stopped, a small town opened its heart.”On the morning of September 11th, 2001, the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, starts an ordinary day that will soon become extraordinary. When the United States closes its airspace following the attacks, 38 planes are unexpectedly diverted to Gander International Airport, bringing nearly 7,000 passengers from all over the world to this remote community.
With little time to prepare, the townspeople spring into action — transforming schools, halls, and local spaces into shelters and kitchens. As fear and confusion spread among the passengers, Gander’s residents offer compassion, food, and comfort to complete strangers. Across language barriers and cultural differences, moments of humour, kindness, and shared humanity begin to emerge.
Over five remarkable days, tensions ease and connections grow. Friendships are formed, love stories begin, and grief is met with empathy. Both locals and visitors are changed by what they experience together — discovering that even in the face of global tragedy, small acts of generosity can make an immense difference.
Ten years later, many of those who were stranded return to Gander to reunite with the people who opened their homes and hearts — a lasting testament to the strength of community and the enduring power of kindness.
