These weekends are run by Peak ASU, an Active Support Unit run jointly by GLSW and Surrey Scout Counties and made up of leaders who are also hillwalking and climbing trainers and assessors and have been working together as a team for many years.  We support and train other leaders and Beaver/Cub/Scout/Explorer leaders and lead groups in the hills and mountains ourselves; many of us hold the Mountain Leader and/or Rock Climbing Instructor Awards, as well as adventurous activities permits for the Scouts.  We are also an approved provider of the National Navigation Award Scheme.

Weekends in the mountains can be physically demanding.  Participants must be fit enough to sustain and enjoy a full programme, you will be walking on steep ground, navigating on paths in all weathers for at least 6-8 hours. We will often be out in low visibilty or darkness to train and give you confidence in low visibility. Peak ASU recognises that climbing and hillwalking are activities with a danger of personal injury or death.  Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions. Please ensure you have a number of recents quality mountain days in your log book.  A QMD is a route over 5 hours and normally an assent of a peak over 600m.

Navigation Courses 

the Navigation courses are aimed at leaders with little or no experience wanting to improve their navigation and turn map reading into navigation, learning skills to teach the Beavers, Cub, Scouts and Explorers in their groups and units. 

The courses will be held at Boidierhurst in Surrey. the tend to be a relaxed and interactive, adatped to the skill and asperations of thoes attending.
