Rachmaninov : All-Night Vigil (SOLD OUT)
Wimbledon Choral Society Joely Koos (cello) Carris Jones (mezzo soprano) James Preston (tenor) Neil Ferris (conductor)
, Holy Trinity Sloane Square * Please note start time *
A specially devised performance pairing the mesmerising psalm text settings taken from the Orthodox All Night Vigil ceremony in Rachmaninov's interpretation with selected movements of Britten’s Cello Suites Nos 1 and 3 and their Russian folk-like themes. The text in the All Night Vigil is sung on Old Church Slavonic, an ancient language of Indo-European origin standardised by Byzantine missionaries in the 9th century, and based on the dialect of Slavs living on the area now known as Thessalonica. Rachmaninov wrote his work in under two weeks during January and February of 1915 and it premiered on 10th March, just days before Wimbledon Choral Society's very first public concert on the Monday 22nd March in Wimbledon.
The cello soloist for our concert is the outstanding Joely Koos (right). As well as being professor of cello and chamber music coach at Trinity College of Music, Joely leads an active freelance musical life dividing her time between orchestral, solo and chamber work. The two vocal soloists, Carris Jones and James Preston, are often found singing with the chamber choir Sonoro and have ideal voices for the Rachmaninov.
As part of the ticket booking process, you are offered the opportunity to make a donation to the Unicef fund to protect children in war-torn Ukraine, should you so wish.
