Terms and Conditions  −  T1 Hill Walking Permit Training Day

About the Day

This is a hill walking development day for Scout leaders working towards their Terrain 1 (T1) permit. We’ll be walking in open countryside where the terrain may be rough, steep, boggy or uneven. The weather in the Brecon Beacons can change quickly, and we may be some distance from immediate assistance.

The day is designed to help you build confidence, judgement and navigation skills in upland terrain. As part of that, you’ll be expected to take responsibility for your own decisions and learning.

What You Need to Know

Hill walking carries inherent risks. These include:

• Slips, trips and falls
• Steep or uneven ground
• River crossings
• Poor visibility
• Rapidly changing weather
• Being in remote areas

We will plan carefully and lead responsibly, in line with Scout Association guidance. However, outdoor activities always involve an element of personal responsibility.

Your Responsibilities

By attending, you agree that:

• You are fit and well enough to take part.
• You will tell the event leader about any medical conditions that may affect you.
• You will bring suitable clothing and equipment for hill walking (including waterproofs, warm layers, appropriate footwear, food, drink, map and compass).
• You will follow instructions from the event leader.
• You will act within your level of competence and speak up if you are unsure about anything.

A Shared Understanding

This is a supportive development environment. We’re here to learn from each other, practise good judgement and grow as leaders.

While the event leaders will take reasonable steps to manage risk, you understand that participation is voluntary and that hill walking involves unavoidable hazards.
