In Richard III, director, producer, and star Laurence Olivier brings Shakespeare’s masterpiece of Machiavellian villainy to ravishing cinematic life. Olivier is diabolically captivating as Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who, through a series of murderous machinations, steals the crown from his brother Edward. And he surrounds himself with a royal supporting cast, which includes Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, and Claire Bloom. Filmed in VistaVision and Technicolor, Richard III is one of the most visually inspired of all big-screen Bard adaptations.
A stellar cast of the best actors of several generations and superb technicians power the depiction of the rise and fall of Richard whose Machiavellian schemes secure the throne of England but at what cost?
The film was an enormous success and intriguingly may have done more to popularise Shakespeare than any other single work. When it was shown on US television the same afternoon (and year) it was released in US theatres, the resulting audience estimated at 62.5 million viewers would have outnumbered the sum total of the play's theatrical audiences over the 358 years since its first performance!
