Public Lecture: Inside the world of deepfakes
Thursday 21st May, 6.30pm - 8pm
About the Lecture
Have you ever been fooled by a photo or video online? Maybe a politician doing something outrageous, a celebrity in an impossible place, or a ‘news’ image that just felt a bit off?Deepfake technology can be used to create fake content of anyone doing anything. Although this technology can have positive uses, it inevitably invites nefarious exploitation with harms including political disinformation, financial fraud, and the creation of sexual digital forgeries.
In this talk on Thursday 21 May at The Storey from 6.30pm (doors open at 6pm), Dr Sophie Nightingale from Lancaster University will provide some background about why and how deepfakes are made as well as discussing her research into the realism and trustworthiness of faces generated using deepfake models.
Alongside the lecture, you’ll have the chance to explore AI research first hand and test whether you can distinguish a real face from one created by AI.
