Gavin Barrass Quartet
About
Peak District–based double and electric bassist Gavin Barrass is a highly respected and in-demand musician on the Manchester jazz scene, performing regularly across the UK and internationally in a wide range of live and recording projects. Known for his expressive playing and compositional voice, Gavin brings depth, sensitivity and musicality to every setting. His debut solo album, The Family Tree (ASC Records, 2017), showcases a core quartet featuring Jeff Guntren (tenor saxophone), Jim Faulkner (guitar) and Dave Walsh (drums). A deeply personal work, the album draws inspiration from the double bass handcrafted by Gavin’s father — the very instrument he performs on throughout the recording — as well as themes of fatherhood, friendship and a strong sense of home rooted in the Peak District.
Adding further intimacy to the project, Gavin performs on a steel-string acoustic guitar, also built by his father in 1967, on two reflective interlude tracks.
The Gavin Barrass Quartet presents music that is both evocative and richly personal. The Family Tree features ten original compositions brought to life with warmth, subtlety and outstanding ensemble interplay. Recorded in a single day, the album captures a natural immediacy and connection between the musicians, further enhanced by guest appearances from Rhiannon James (viola) and Margit van der Zwan (cello).
Together, the group creates a sound that is lyrical, heartfelt and deeply rooted in storytelling, offering audiences a compelling and authentic contemporary jazz experience.
