Directing School Music Groups: A Guide For Beginners

Do you freeze when you step in front of your choir, unsure what to do with your hands? Feel like a bit of a wally leading singing assembly? Does the thought of running the recorder group fill you with dread – or your kazoo ensemble descend into chaos? If any of this sounds familiar, this course is for you.This fun, supportive half day CPD introduces the basics of conducting and directing musical ensembles, designed especially for beginners. Open to staff in infant, primary, secondary and special schools, it’s ideal for anyone who runs, would like to run, or has been instructed (!) to run a school music group.
Led by Alan Gifford – Area Manager for Dover, Thanet and Canterbury, Musical Director of The Medway Band, and a highly experienced conductor and teacher – the session covers:
• Basic conducting technique
• Effective rehearsal and ensemble management
• Choosing suitable repertoire
• Preparing for and leading performances with confidence
No previous experience is needed, though those looking to refresh existing skills are very welcome.
Expect a practical, friendly session that builds confidence and skills – and enjoy a great excuse to book yourself a half day out of school.
Hosted at the Thannington Neighbourhood Resource Centre in Canterbury from 1pm-4pm.
As per our terms and conditions there is a charge of £15 for non attendance without prior notice.
This session is free for Kent and Medway state schools and has a session fee of £15 for independent and out of area schools. Please read the terms and conditions for full details.
