Introduction to Green Woodworking - Bowl turning
A new course for our bodger Richard and Deepdale Farm, with dates available from March 2026.
Whether you are completely new to green woodworking, or you’ve previously done our original Introduction to Green Woodworking course using a spindle, why not have a go at bowl turning?
To help you dive straight in, Richard will have prepared a bowl blank and have it mounted on the pole lathe for you. He will patiently guide you on how to use the various hook tools and the angle at which to have them, which will gradually turn the wood into your bowl.
The aim is that by the end of the day you should have one bowl to take home, and a basic understanding of the core skills for bowl turning.
This course uses slightly different tools and techniques to the spindle, so it is complementary to our other introductory course. However, it does require a degree of fitness and mobility to get the most from the day because all the power that drives the lathe comes from your stepping motion on the treadle. Therefore, if you have any hip, knee, back or other ongoing health problems, you may find this course over demanding.
It’s a great opportunity to gain skills in this mindful rural craft.
- All tools are supplied by the instructor.
- Wear clothing suitable to work undercover but outdoors.
- Bring a packed lunch to enjoy in the barn or courtyard.
- Hot drinks will be provided throughout the day.
- All courses have a maximum of four participants to ensure Richard can give you his full attention.
- All courses require a decent level of fitness due to the physicality required to use the lathe. Please ensure you feel confident of your fitness before booking, and disclose any pre-existing medical conditions to Richard in advance, so that he can adjust the day where possible.
- The course will take place at our woodland barn, close to where the green wood is harvested fresh for each green woodworking course. The barn is under cover, but where possible the doors will be open onto the courtyard.
- The course and venue are not suitable for participants to bring their dogs or other pets.
- An email will be sent prior to the course to give directions to the barn.
- The courses do not include accommodation. We recommend staying at Deepdale Camping & Rooms, which offer excellent self-catering rooms and camping for tents, campervans and motorhomes.
