The Many Faces of Zionism
About:
With his expertise in Jewish history and culture, Paul Forgasz will explore what is more relevant today than ever.Set against the background of nineteenth century European nationalism and fuelled by the persistence of anti-Semitism, as well as the failure of Jews in the Russian Empire to achieve emancipation, Jewish thinkers proposed a “Zionist solution” to the Jewish question. However, there was no one unified view about the nature of the problem or the solution. In this short six-week course we will examine the conflicting streams of Zionism that emerged by the early twentieth century and which infused the Jewish State with deep ideological tensions following its creation in 1948. Beyond the ideas of these early classical Zionist thinkers, we will also explore more recent discussions and debates about the nature and purpose of Zionism.
