The Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas - A Talk with Professor Andrew Markus
About
In this talk Professor Andrew Markus will provide a historical context for understanding Islamic radicalism, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood
and Hamas. It considers key figures in the Brotherhood, Hassan al-Banna and Sayyid Qutb, the 1988 Covenant of Hamas and its 2017 statement of General Principles. It also examines the record of Hamas as ruler of Gaza, its attitude to freedom of speech and democracy, toleration of diversity, and its treatment of women, and considers parallels with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Emeritus Professor Andrew Markus is an accomplished historian and academic, specialising in Australian immigration history. For a number of years he taught the history of the modern Middle East at Monash University.
