About the Facilitators
Roman Ružbacký
Principal - Roman Ruzbacky & Associates
Roman is an experienced diversity, equity and inclusion leader and practitioner and analytical chemist, with over 25 years of knowledge, skills and experience in the design and implementation of DEI strategies and programs of work that help create equitable, inclusive and productive workplaces.
Roman established Roman Ruzbacky & Associates consultancy in 2021. Roman has worked in the scientific research, university sector and the Victorian Public Sector in a number of DEI roles. He has completed ten successful WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citations, and three Public Sector Gender Equity Plans. He is one of the few male DEI practitioners in Australia that work in gender equity.
He is the former President of the Equal Employment Opportunity Network and a member of the Swimming Victoria D&I Advisory Committee and the AHRI DEI Advisory Committee.
At the core of the work is the belief that people should be treated with dignity and respect and have the ability to participate in all aspects of work and public life.
Vanessa Paterson
Principal - Checksfield Consulting
Vanessa is one of Australia’s leading specialists in workplace gender equality, having previously worked for more than 20 years in executive roles with the Federal Government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA). During her time at WGEA she was responsible for administering and reviewing WGEA legislation, managing compliance reporting, and developing and managing leading practice programs such as the evidence-based WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation (EOCGE), the Business Achievement Awards and the Pay Equity Ambassador program.
She has assisted many hundreds of employers across all industries to achieve compliance with WGEA legislation and to become successful citation holders in the highly sought after evidence-based Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation.
Her key expertise includes understanding the unique environments in which businesses operate and working with employers to understand and leverage their data to develop tailored, leading practice gender equality strategies and action plans.
Vanessa is passionate about working with employers, from all industries and employer sizes, to achieve organisational effectiveness through gender equality.
Julie Burton - Principal

Julie is one of Australia’s leading experts in workplace gender equality. She leads with a human-centric, innovative and strategic focus, using evidence-based information to develop tailored strategies for employers. With over 17 year’s experience working in management roles with the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) and a background in organisation development, she is highly motivated to assist employers achieve meaningful, sustainable change.
At WGEA, Julie assisted and supported thousands of employers of varying size and across multiple industries, to achieve compliance. She is generous with sharing her knowledge and experience, providing advice to practitioners, leadership teams and industry leads on how to leverage gender equality to enhance business effectiveness. Julie has also supported hundreds of employers to attain the highly regarded and much sought after leading practice recognition of WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality (EOCGE) citation, facilitated Pay Equity Ambassador forums with executive teams, presented at industry forums and hosted round tables with leadership teams on how to progress their gender equality performance. With high integrity, a pragmatic approach and a growth mindset, she combines her exceptional knowledge of gender equality, organisation development and leading practice to deliver positive, transformational change for clients.
