CSA AUGUST 2019 EVENT: Aristotle and thePhilosophy of Colour Perception with Professor Mohan Matthen (University of Toronto) at the Julian Ashton Art School, The Rocks, Sunday August 11th, 3.00-5.00 pm.

Mohan Matthen is Professor of Philosophy and senior Canada Research Chair at the University of Toronto and has written extensively on the philosophy of perception and more recently on aesthetics. Among his numerous publications he is the author of Seeing, Doing and Knowing (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2005) and the editor of The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Perception (OUP, 2015), Perception and Its Modalities (with Dustin Stokes and Stephen Biggs, OUP, 2014), Color Science and Color Ontology (with Jonathan Cohen, MIT Press, 2010) and Philosophy of Biology(with Christopher Stephens, Elsevier 2006).Trained initially in physics, Mohan is noted for the scientific influence he has brought to the philosophy of perception over the last four decades.

Mohan will speak about his approach to the philosophy of perception, giving as a specific example a study currently in press on Aristotle’s theory of perception and its continuing influence on the philosophy of colour. Mohan’s topic directly raises the seemingly perennial question of “What is colour?”, and we invite everyone present to join in a lively discussion at the end of the presentation.
