Speaker Bio
Richard Chesterman practised law as barrister, judge and arbitrator for over 50 years. He was a barrister for 28 years, 15 as QC, before being appointed to the Supreme Court in 1998 and then to the Court of Appeal in 2008. As barrister he served in the RAAF reserve and was awarded the Reserve Forces Decoration. In 1992 Richard conducted an inquiry into a complaint that the then Commissioner of Police had misused public money. The Commissioner resigned as a result of the inquiry’s findings.
Richard was the Chairman of Cancer Council Qld for 10 years. He retired from the court in 2012 after having written over 900 judgements, and began a new practice as an arbitrator and mediator in large commercial disputes. He inquired into the operation of the Qld Medical Board at the request of the Crime and Misconduct Commission, and was appointed Commissioner of Inquiry into the delivery of a payroll system which underpaid many Qld Health employees.
He was awarded the AO in 2011 for distinguished service to the judiciary and retired in 2022. He and his wife live in Brisbane but are regular visitors to the Sunshine Coast where they attend Sunday services at St Andrew’s Anglican Church.
