Learn Easy English. 2 day writing course

 

Participants develop an understanding of Easy English, review current resources and research, and begin to develop tyour own Easy English document with the support of Access Easy English staff. This training focuses on all elements of implementing Easy English, including language and use of images. It provides numerous opportunities for participants to practice implementing these and other elements in their own document. Participants also consider the organisational implementation of Easy English.

 

When:      Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 November, 2018

 

Where:     Thebarton Community Centre.

                   Corner South Road and Ashwin Parade, Torrensville.

Time:         9:15 am – 4:30 pm

Cost:         $600 + gst

Anyone who writes information for the public, eg: communications and marketing staff; support workers, planners, therapists, disability advocates, teachers, ethics teams, survey developers, council staff, NDIS staff,report writers..........

 

Learning objectives

You will

• learn the legislative framework for Easy English;
• identify who Easy English is useful for;
• learn about  the current research in Easy English;
• explore current Easy English resources available in the Australian and international context;
• learn and practice each of the steps to develop quality Easy English written materials;
• begin to write your own Easy English document, including selecting and developing appropriate image supports;
• receive references and resources for further study and independent research;
• discuss strategies to begin to implement Easy Englsih in your organisation.

 

This workshop has limited places of just 12 participants.

 

All participants need to bring a document/brochure/flyer from their work environment, or other written material to learn to develop into Easy English during the workshop.

 

It would be useful if you had access to a laptop for the workshop.

Access Easy English is owned by Cathy Basterfield.

Cathy is a trained Speech Pathologist, with 30 years experience. She has a national and international reputation in the development of Easy English. Cathy is acknowledged by her peers as a highly experienced, skilled practitioner in the field of Easy English. She is also recognised as being at the forefront of the development of Easy English in Australia, being one of the first practitioners in this specialist field. She has been at the forefront of the development of quality standards and benchmarks for Easy English.

 

Cathy was awarded a Victorian Government Ethel Temby scholarship for an investigative study into international trends and accreditation for Easy English writing and publications in 2011. Cathy is regularly invited to present at conferences on this subject matter.

South Australian Coouncil on Intellectual Disability (SACID)

SACID work towards achieving a South Australian community in which people with an intellectual disability are involved in and accepted as equal participating members. We do this through consultation with stakeholders, advocating for an inclusive community  promoting the rights of people with intellectual disability and collaborating with likeminded organisations.

 

SACID is the South Australian agency of Inclusion Australia. Inclusion Australia bring together groups across Australia who are connected to people with intellectual disability and who are committed to the shared vision of inclusion in all aspects of Australian life. We make sure South Australia's voice is heard in all of the work done by Inclusion Australia.

 

SACID also provide an information service called SA Inclusion Point. SA Inclusion Point is for people with an intellectual disability, their families, community and mainstream services and teh wider community. People with  intellectual disability and their families can get easy to understand information to help them make decisions and connect with their community. We run information sessions for people with intellectual disability and their families; we have information for mainstream services to help them do a better job of including people with intellectual disability; and we answer questions from anyone in the community to help them better understand intellectual disability. We do this to help the South Australian community be inclusive of people with intellectual disability.
