One Day PODD Communication Partner Training
Location
About
The Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) approach assists people with complex communication needs to learn to understand and use language to enable autonomous communication. It provides strategies to support the design, production and implementation of communication systems to enable genuine communication for a variety of functions in all daily environments.
Learning Outcomes
This workshop aims to assist participants to feel more confident in using PODD communication systems in everyday life with the person(s) they are supporting. It builds a foundation of shared understanding in how to support people with complex communication needs, and teaches knowledge and skills through video case examples and supported practice using PODD communication systems.
Participants will:
- Reflect on current practice for teaching communication skills
- Understand key features of PODD communication systems
- Be aware of PODD resources - both paper-based and page-sets for speech generating communication devices and tablets
- Learn to model communication using PODD communication books (please advise when registering if you require support learning how to model on an electronic PODD system)
- Feel confident using PODD communication books, so communication happens across the day, anywhere and at any time.
Target Audience
This workshop is specifically aimed at those who are supporting someone who uses PODD, such as family members, extended family, support people, and educators. Therapists who are NOT directly involved in selecting and customising PODD systems for their clients would also benefit from this training. For those who need to learn how to select and customise PODD communication systems and support others to implement PODD, an official two-day Introductory Workshop would be more suitable. Completion of a two-day Introductory Workshop is required to attend a 5-day Advanced PODD Workshop or a one-day alternative access solutions PODD Workshop.
Presenter
Yvette Theodorsen, founder of Interactive Speech Pathology, has focussed most of her 18 years as a speech pathologist working in the area of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). She is a certified PODD Workshop presenter.
Yvette is passionate about every person having a voice, no matter how significant their challenges may be, and has implemented PODD communication books with people from 9 months to 46 years of age, believing that nobody is too young or too old to begin with AAC.
