Boroondara: Urban Cycling Confidence: Sat 15th October
Traffic-free component will be conducted by 1 instructor. On-road component will be facilitated by 2 instructors – one at the front and one at the rear of the group.
Date: Saturday 15th October 10am-3pm (break from 12.30pm-1pm)
Location: Camberwell Civic Centre, Inglesby Road, Camberwell
Cost: $21.60 adult, or $10.80 concession
Session inclusions:
- Welcome and introduction, session format and expectations.
- Clothing, helmet and ABCD bike safety checks: the essential safety checks before every ride.
- Warm up and bike fit: assess current rider ability and bike setup, adjust as required.
- Basic bike handling skills: mount and dismount, start and stop.
- Basic bike control skills: braking, riding in a straight line, cornering.
- Intermediate bike skills: using gears, emergency stopping.
- Communication techniques: signalling, scanning, using eye contact.
- Traffic skills: positioning, merging in traffic lane.
- Traffic skills discussion: shared paths and bike lanes, dooring, tram tracks, other obstacles, road rules.
- On-road component: 1.5-2 hour on-road ride in light traffic, including stops to discuss scenarios such as roundabouts, stop signs, hook turns, bike lanes, and tram lines (where available).
- Lots of time for questions and answers.
Participants will need to:
- Be able to ride confidently on shared paths and wish to start riding on the road
- Bring their bike and helmet in roadworthy condition

During the session please observe physical distancing by maintaining 1.5m between yourself and others where possible, and observe cough etiquette, hand washing and personal hygiene measures.
How many other participants will be in the group?
- The group size is limited to 8 participants.
What should I bring?
- A bicycle of suitable size and type, in good condition with working brakes, a bell and pumped up tyres. If you are unsure, please email bikeitbettercyclecoaching@gmail.com prior to booking.
- Australian Standards Approved helmet in good condition
- Runners or similar closed-toe footwear
- Sun/weather protection
- A bottle of water
- Snacks, lunch (or there are cafes/shops nearby)
- Any medication
- Suitable clothing for the conditions
What is the start/finish time?
The program will take place between 10:00am-3:00pm (with a 30min lunch break at around 12:30pm). Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign in and prepare your bike.
Where should I come for the training?
The program will take place at Camberwell Civic Centre car park, 3 Inglesby Rd, Camberwell VIC 3124. You will be sent a reminder email with these details a few days before the session.
What facilities are there at the location?
Toilets, water and undercover areas will be available.
What if the weather isn’t great?
The training will only be cancelled if the weather forecast predicts very wet, very windy or very hot weather. In this event, we will contact you 2 hours’ prior to the start time. If weather conditions deteriorate after training has begun, training activities may be modified or omitted or the session terminated to minimise health and safety risks.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket?
You don't need to bring your ticket on the day. We will have a list of registered participants.
