About
DoReMix - Russian Musical Theatre in Sydney presents
The life of a Cossack village used to be well-ordered and calm as Don river. The men relaxed, indulged in moonshine, treated their wives with a firm hand and beat them to keep them in line. Women did not argue with their husbands in any way, patiently took their drunken antics, and diligently did all household chores. It seemed that nothing foretold any troubles. But then Nastya returned from the city to her native land and began teaching the local Cossack women a new way of life, to awaken their self-awareness. So the village became divided into two irreconcilable camps: the women's commune and the man’s artel. Shortly speaking, a revolt started in the village...
The original concept of Women’s Revolt belonged to Kirill Vasiliev, director of the Rostov Theatre of Musical Comedy. In collaboration with the famous poet Mikhail Plyatskovsky, he created a libretto based on the “Don Stories” by Mikhail Sholokhov, and the composer Evgeny Ptichkin wrote wonderful music.
The premiere of this musical comedy took place in 1975. Bright, colourful characters, figurative vocabulary, juicy humour combined with witty, stylised folk music – all this turned out to be fertile material for musical comedy.
More than four decades have passed since the creation of the Women’s Revolt, but the plot's idea and lively humour are still relevant; and the soul responds to the beautiful music of Evgeny Ptichkin, which is replete with beautiful, bright, catchy melodies.
DoReMix Theatre decided to turn to the production of this fun, kind and laugh-provoking performance, to take a fresh look at the storyline, preserving the vivid characters, folk spirit, colour and atmosphere of the Cossack life.
