When you add blue (disability) and yellow (gift) the outcome is green (twice-exceptional) – the green (twice-exceptionality) can be in many hues and varieties.

Every twice-exceptional student requires a curriculum and pathway through the education levels that is individually modified to cater for their disability and their gift, together. But how does a green student flourish when the academic system caters only for the yellow or the blue? What can parents and educators do for the ‘green’ student?

Anne is a Founding Director of Kids Like Us Australia Limited, a teacher, counsellor and grandparent. She holds two Master’s degrees in Education (Gifted, and Special Education), as well as Counselling and Mental Health qualifications. Currently she is studying for her Doctor of Education from The Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity in Education, Los Angeles.
Anne’s journey to support and advocate for twice exceptional (2e) students in Australia has involved many tussles and challenges within schools and with educational experts. She believes that the difficulties, in educating 2e students adequately, are intrinsic to the system rather than a ‘fault’ in the student. Anne, along with her team of exceptionally keen and caring teachers, advocate for, with and on behalf of 2e students every day. In this manner, Kids Like Us and the proposed Tombolo Academy confirms that 2e students exist, live and go to school in Australia; are identifiable and underserved yet are deserving of curriculum modification. For Anne, the journey started as a parent, now she empowers others to find successful routes through the system.
