Thinning the Plot – crime writing tutorial

Narelle M Harris

We all admire a tricky crime plot, but the mystery that is revealed to the reader in stages is, generally speaking, already known to the writer – who has to know what happened in order to seed clues and misdirection for the detective and the reader. This can be especially challenging when writing crime stories for detectives who specialise in the peculiar, such as Sherlock Holmes. In Thinning the Plot, Narrelle M Harris steps through one method of devising a crime and then working backwards, deconstructing and ‘thinning out’ the events to determine how the crime was done, so that the appropriate clues can be left. Narrelle M Harris writes crime, horror, fantasy, romance and erotica. Her 30+ novels and short stories have been published in Australia, US and the UK. Narrelle, who taught English overseas and has dabbled in theatre, is an experienced public speaker, delivering talks and workshops for libraries, festivals and writing groups throughout the year. Her work includes vampire novels, erotic spy adventures, paranormal thrillers, het/queer romance, traditional Holmesian mysteries, and Holmes/Watson romances The Adventure of the Colonial Boy (2016) and A Dream to Build a Kiss On (2018). Spec-fic het romance, Grounded, the Scar Tissue and Other Stories collection, and rock ‘n roll urban fantasy adventure, Kitty and Cadaver, all came out in 2019. Award nominations include Fly By Night (Ned Kelly Awards), Witch Honour and Witch Faith (short-listed for the George Turner Prize), and Walking Shadows (Chronos Awards; Davitt Awards). Her ghost/crime story Jane won the Athenaeum Library’s “Body in the Library” prize at the 2017 Scarlet Stiletto Awards. In 2020, Scar Tissue and Other Stories was nominated for the 2019 Aurealis Awards for Best Collection. www.narrellemharris.com For Patreon, Narrelle writes the Duo Ex Machina M/M romance crime series.
