Book Launch
A Schoolbag Full by John Kelly
John Kelly, a teacher of English, Classical Studies and Religious Education for nearly forty years, cordially invites you to the launch of his new poetry collection, which elicits high praise from readers of the manuscript.
Elizabeth Waters, Teacher Librarian at Sacred Heart College, Somerton Park SA (1986-2012) says: John Kelly’s love of language and literature, his penetrating insights and his artistic sensibilities, shine forth in this eclectic poetry collection. From the lovingly rendered depictions of a Catholic boyhood in suburban Adelaide, to the time when he closes his classroom door for the last time, his subjects are many and varied. Sport, art, faith, family, friendship, ideology and classical literature are prevailing themes from which he draws universal truths about life and humanity. This is poetry written with love, passion and integrity.
Former literary editor of The Australian, Barry Oakley, says of the collection's major poem, Ghost Riders: … a wonderful poem. It unrolls with the sureness of epic, melding myth, literature and scripture into a harmony backlit by personal experience and deep faith. There’s a flame burning in it, illuminating everything that it touches.
John’s earlier poetry publications were Seasons of the Spirit (Homebush: St Paul's Publications,1978) and Bearings (Melbourne: The Polding Press, 1982).
