2022 Clonard College International Women's Day Breakfast
Tuesday 8 March 2022 is International Women's Day.
To celebrate this iconic day and acknowledge the tremendous efforts of women and girls in our community, we are hosting a breakfast at the College.
The theme for the event this year is #BreakTheBias.
Guest speakers, AFL Women's (AFLW) players, Melissa Hickey and Danielle Higgins will share their experiences playing football in (what has traditionally been) a male dominated sport, the challenges faced and how the industry is working towards #BreakingTheBias.
Melissa is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club and the Geelong Football Club in the AFLW. She represented Melbourne in the exhibition games prior to the creation of AFL Women's before being drafted by the club in 2016 as a marquee signing for the inaugural AFLW. Melissa served as Geelong captain in the club's first two AFL Women's seasons. In the VFLW, she won seven premierships, represented Victoria on three occasions and featured in the VFL Women's team of the year.
Melissa was coach of the Vic Country team which participated in the AFLW Under 19 Championships, and was named as coach in the All-Australian team in 2021. Melissa is currently the assistant coach of the Western Bulldogs AFLW team and provides special commentary as part of the Channel 7 broadcast team for the AFLW games.
Danielle is a current AFLW player for the Geelong Cats. She has played six seasons of football with the Geelong Women’s team and was part of both the inaugural Geelong Cats VFLW team in 2017 and the AFLW team, which entered the competition in 2019. Danielle grew up in Geelong playing netball in the GFL and was part of representative teams in netball and basketball before she decided to cross over to football in her late 20’s. Danielle is a Psychology and Health teacher at Clonard College and an ambassador for Read the Play, an organisation which raises awareness for youth mental health.
Join Melissa, Danielle, Old Collegians, staff, students, their families and the wider College community, as we celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness against bias and take action for a gender equal world.
Bookings are essential and in line with government regulations, all visitors must provide proof of vaccination/medical exemption upon check-in.
