A Focus on Social Emotional Factors that Impact Giftedness

An Information Session for Parents and Educators

with

Debbie Youd

The impact of social emotional factors on gifted children and their provision is an often overlooked area of giftedness, despite the fact that these can have a significant impact on both the wellbeing and achievement of gifted children. This session will identify some of these key social emotional factors and their impact, and also explore some of the strategies that parents and teachers can use to help gifted children overcome these difficulties. Suitable for parents, teachers, psychologists, pre-service teachers and school leaders.

Debbie Youd is a registered teacher and psychologist with over 35 years of experience in the area of education. She holds a Graduate Certificate of Education - Gifted Education and a Master of Education and has a long standing involvement in gifted education as a parent, teacher and psychologist. She has extensive experience in assessing, identifying, counselling and teaching gifted students, as well as delivering professional learning to schools and teachers as both a university lecturer and consultant in a number of areas, related to both gifted education and education more generally. She has also worked extensively with parents to support gifted children. Her specific areas of expertise include assessing and identifying gifted children, curriculum differentiation, underachievement, the social emotional development of gifted children, and learning disabled gifted students.
