ADFAS Perth - Roy de Maistre, Francis Bacon & White Figure'
Roy de Maistre is renowned as one of Australia’s first modernists, having created the still-astounding exhibition Colour in Art with Roland Wakelin in 1919. What is less known is that he relocated to London in 1930 and never returned to Australia. Shortly after arrival he met Francis Bacon, then a 20-year-old interior designer. For the next seven years, de Maistre assumed the role of Bacon’s first art mentor. A particular sequence of paintings known as the ‘New Atlantis’ series from 1933 mark the highpoint of their professional and personal relationship; and the Art Gallery of Western Australia owns one of these works, White figure, c.1933. Join Andrew Gaynor as he recontextualises this little-seen gem to reinstate its importance in both artists’ oeuvre.
