Sehnsucht: Travellers, Distance and Longing at Barwon Park
Team of Pianists presents C & C Rigg Bequest Classic Music in Historic Venues 2022 at Barwon Park.
With the evocative melding of soprano voice, clarinet and piano, Judith Dodsworth, Robert Schubert and Robert Chamberlain explore what it means to yearn for a loved one, a place or a state of being, when distance conspires to keep us apart.

We will journey through the glorious music of Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Vaughan Williams, as well as distinguished Australian composers Margaret Sutherland (1897-1984), Lawrence Whiffin (1930-2012) and Julian Yu (b. 1957), taking in the worlds of opera, recital and chamber music, poetry and film.
This recital includes Parto Parto! from La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart and Schubert’s perennially popular The Shepherd on the Rock. A selection from the Songs of Travel by Ralph Vaughan Williams, more traditionally the domain of baritones, continues the theme, as does his Three Vocalises for soprano and clarinet - haunting duos from 1958, the final year of Vaughan Williams’ life. Robert Schumann’s Fantasiestücke Op 73 for clarinet & piano, plus five Albumblätter Op. 99 for solo piano, express the highs and lows of his own Sehnsucht, while Margaret Sutherland’s (1897 - 1984) haunting and mysterious The Orange Tree setting of poetry by Australian John Shaw Neilson and Lawrence Whiffin’s (1930 - 2012) beautiful and at times boisterous Suite Colette, originally written for film, and arranged by Julian Yu for clarinet and piano, give a distinctly Australian flavour to some paths in our musical journey.
