Classic Anglican Theological Education

Trinity in Sydney is an exciting new partnership between Trinity College Theological School (TCTS) and St James' Institute, Sydney. Trinity's world-renowned faculty will teach a series of Saturday seminars and week-long intensives at the St James' Institute. The units will suit both clergy and laity, either for credit or audit. 

 

Saturday Seminar* (Saturday 18 February 2023)

The Gospel of Matthew – The Kingdom of Heaven has Come Near: Understanding the Gospel of Matthew

This seminar will provide an introductory overview of the Gospel according to Matthew, with particular attention paid to the questions of authorship, date and first readers of the Gospel, Matthew’s relationship to the other Gospels, its major themes and structure, and how the Gospel of Matthew is presented in the Year A Lectionary.

*This one-day seminar is the first day of the one-week intensive ‘The Gospel of Luke: “Proclaim the Year of the Lord’s Favour”’ (see below). It is also open to those who do not wish to enrol in the full intensive for the cost of $75.00 for the day.

The Gospel of Matthew

This unit provides an in-depth study of the Gospel of Matthew. The primary focus is on the narrative shape and the core theological themes which make this Gospel unique. Attention will be paid to Matthew’s use of his sources, including the Old Testament Scriptures. It will also explore the issue of authorship and examine the community out of which the Gospel arose. The unit will consider the ways in which this Gospel addresses issues that are of continuing relevance for the life and mission of the church.

Women’s Authority in the New Testament and Early Church – Spotlight on Women: The Ancient World and the Apostle Paul

This seminar looks at the New Testament writings gathered under the name of the apostle Paul. It will consider Paul’s own missionary work alongside women in ministry and explore some of the passages that prove difficult for us today. In doing so, it will take into account the context and values of the ancient Mediterranean world.

Women’s Authority in the New Testament and Early Church

In this unit students will undertake an in-depth exegetical and theological study of selected New Testament texts featuring women and issues of authority. Students will also engage with women’s authority and position in the period of the early church. Students will explore the socio-cultural, literary and theological contexts for these texts, in dialogue with contemporary feminist approaches. In addition, students will explore the current context of women’s leadership and draw conclusions from the context of the period of the New Testament and early church.
