"The Nurses of the Vyner Brooke"
On 12 February 1942 sixty-five Australian nurses were boarded onto the ship the Vyner Brooke with civilian men, women and children who were fleeing Singapore as it capitulated to the Japanese in World War Two. This presentation will focus on the experiences of the group during World War Two, focusing specifically on the camaraderie and endurance of the women.
Sarah Fulford is a PhD Candidate at Curtin University focusing on the experiences of Australian Female nurses from the Boer War until the Vietnam War. This research brings to the forefront the female perspective on Australian military history.
Sarah teaches into the History and International Relations programs within the Faculty of Humanities and throughout the Faculty of Health Sciences into First Year sociology programs.
